                The picture shows why the Moon looks like different shapes.

                The Moon cannot make light itself. We see it because light

                from the Sun hits it and comes off it. The Sun only puts its light
                on one half of the Moon. When the Moon moves around the

                Earth, sometimes we see more and sometimes less of this

                side of the Moon.


                The different shapes of the Moon are called the phases of the

                Moon. Each phase has its own name. This picture shows the

                phases of the Moon.
