Earth and Space Science
Stars are very big balls of gas on fire. They look small because
they are so far away from Earth. The Sun is the nearest star to
Earth. This makes it look big to us. But most of the other stars
you see at night are much bigger than our Sun.
If you watch the stars all night, it looks like they move in a
circle. Some stars even look like they come up and set like the
Sun does. But the stars do not really move in a circle around
the sky. They stay in the same place. It looks like they move in
a circle for the same reason that the Sun looks like it moves. It
is because the Earth is turning.
The stars make patterns in the sky. For thousands of years
people saw star patterns that look like animals and objects.
These star patterns look different at different times of the year.
But the stars are not changing. They look different because the
Earth is moving around the Sun.
