Hydrologists watch the water in the
water cycle and measure it to help
them understand how much water
there is in different places. This can
help to find any problems and can
also help to predict rainfall, floods
and droughts.
Measurements are also made to
see how much pollution there is and
what is happening because of acid
rain.
How much water is underground
and in reservoirs can be measured
and compared to how much water
people use. This information is
then used to decide how to control
the water on Earth to make sure
that people have enough fresh
(clean) water.
Hydrologists also help to decide
where new towns and cities
should be built. It is important that
new places have enough water.
A lot of water on Earth is stored
as snow in the mountains. This
provides more fresh water when
the snow starts to melt. In some
places, the water that is stored as
snow provides up to 75 per cent
of the fresh water in that area.
