3 The density of an object is its mass divided by its volume:
mass
density =
volume
We usually measure density in g/cm .
3
So, the density of this block is:
225 g = 22.5 g/cm 3
10 cm 3
Did You Know?
Water is unusual!
In the solid state, water is less dense than in the liquid state. This is because
the particles in water move away from each other when they freeze. This
means solid water is less dense than liquid water and explains why an
iceberg floats on water!
Let’s Reflect
1 What is density?
2 How is density different in solids, liquids and gases?
3 Why do objects sink?
