Let’s Look
                       Let’s Look

You will see how moving plates can change the rocks in an area.

1 Cover a paper plate with jam or sugar frosting. This is the magma below
                       the Earth’s surface.

2 Use two crackers. These crackers are two of Earth’s plates.

3 Push the ‘plates’ (crackers) together.
                       • What happens to the ‘magma’?

                       • How will rocks look when the magma becomes solid?

4 Pull the ‘plates’ away from each other.
                       • What happens to the magma now?
                       • How does this change the rocks?

5 Move the ‘plates’ sideways past each other, with the edges touching.
                       • What kind of Earth event can happen because of this?

                       • How does this change the rocks?

Plate tectonic engineers are scientists who measure and make maps of
Earth’s plates. They check how the plates are moving and how they are
                    changing rocks.
