                       Let’s Look
                       Let’s Look

Scientists cut into the ground and take out rocks. Then they look at the
layers and fossils. This helps them find out how the area changed.

Your teacher will give you a rock sample. Look at this with your group. Talk
                    about:

                    • which layer was made fi rst

                    • which layer was made last.
Look at the table. This has information about different rocks.

Rock What It Looks Like Where It Is Made
                           Granite Small black particles Volcanoes

Limestone Small white particles Under the sea

Shale Big brown particles Layers of mud under water

Can you use the table to name the different rocks in your sample?

Now answer the questions in your Workbook.

Scientists who study fossils are called palaeontologists.

                       Let’s Reflect

1 Name the three main rock types.
2 Think of two ways we can tell how an area changed by looking at its

rocks. Talk about this with a partner.
