This picture shows a frog fossil.
This frog died a long time ago. Its body was slowly buried by the sand or
mud that settled out of the water. The soft parts of the frog rotted away. The
hard bones stayed. After a long time, the sand and mud changed into rock.
The frog’s bones became part of the rock.
The fossils in a rock can tell us about changes in the area. For example,
frogs live in water. This frog fossil shows that the area in the picture was
under water in the past.
