There are three types of rock:

                    • Sedimentary rock – this is made from very small pieces of other rocks.
They are pushed together for a very long time. This makes them into a
new rock. Sedimentary rocks often formed underwater.

                    • Igneous rock – this comes from hot, liquid rock from inside the Earth.
When it cools it changes into a new rock.

                    • Metamorphic rock – this is made from other rocks underground. The very
high temperature and pressure changes the rock into a new rock of a
                      different type.

Look at this picture. You can see the different layers in the rocks.

The layers were made from different types of sand and mud. After a long
time, the particles pushed together to make a new rock. The layers at the

bottom are the oldest. The layers at the top are the newest.
The rocks in the picture may have fossils. Fossils are the shapes of animals
and plants that lived long ago.
