• If time is measured in hours and distance is measured in kilometres, then
the speed will be measured in kilometres per hour (km/h).

                  • If time is measured in seconds and distance is measured in metres, then
the speed will be measured in metres per second (m/s).
                  Look at the following situation.

Zeina is running in the playground.

She runs a distance of 10 metres in a time of 5 seconds.
How can we work out the speed that Zeina is running?

                                                            distance

                                                        speed time

                             distance 10 meters
                  speed =                 so speed =                  ; speed = 2 m/s
                                time 5 seconds

                       Let’s Understand

Work out the speed that you walk, skip, hop (jump on one leg) and run
                    along a track.

                    Think about the measurements you
will need. How can you get these
                    measurements?

What is your fastest way of moving?

What is your slowest way of moving?
Who is the fastest runner in your class?

Record your answers in the Workbook.
