The Earth’s crust is not made
up of one piece. It is made from

                    different pieces or plates. The
plates can move very slowly. The
plates move slowly over the hot
rock below them. This is a map of

                    Earth’s plates.

                    Mountains are made by moving
                    moving plates. The moving crust
slowly pushes the ground up into

                    tall mountains. A mountain range
is a long line of mountains. The
                    mountains in a mountain range
were all made at the same time

and in the same way. Many of the
                    world’s mountain ranges are near
the edges of plates. For example, the Andes is Earth’s longest mountain
range. It is along the edge of the South American Plate. The Himalayas is

Earth’s highest mountain range. It is along the edge of the Indian Plate.

A deep ocean trench is a deep
valley under the ocean. They are
made when one of Earth’s plates
                    goes under another plate. This

                    picture shows the Mariana Trench.
This is the deepest ocean trench
                    on Earth.
