Changes of State
If there is enough heat energy,

                  materials can change state. This
                  happens when the particles vibrate
so much that they move even
further away from each other and
                  become arranged in a different

way. Solids can change to liquids
and liquids can change to gases.

Sometimes, a solid can change straight to a gas if enough heat energy is

                  added.

                  Think!
What is the name for each of these changes?

How do the properties of the material change?

                  Chemical Changes

Heat can also cause chemical changes. These changes are irreversible
because the particles change and a new material is formed. This often
                  happens when we cook food.
