Let’s Learn
Sometimes materials are more useful when they are heated.
Heating a material can change it in different ways. A material might
expand, change state or have a chemical change when it is heated.
Expansion
When the particles inside a material gain heat energy, they vibrate more.
The vibrations make the particles move further away from each other. This
makes the object expand and get bigger.
When the material cools down again, the particles vibrate less and
the spaces between the particles are smaller. This means the material
contracts and gets smaller again.
Solids, liquids and gases can expand. What happens when these objects
are heated?
