1 Materials and
Their Properties
Big Picture
Everything is made of particles called
atoms and molecules. The way these
particles are arranged and how they
behave within a substance helps
us to understand the properties of
different materials. They also help us to
understand what happens when these
substances are heated, cooled or mixed
together.
We can use what we know about
particles to explain why some changes
are reversible and other changes are
not. We can also find ways to separate
substances that were mixed together.
