                           Glossary

                 Active volcano – A volcano that can erupt.

                 Continental plate – A plate under the land parts of Earth.

                 Crust – The rocky top layer of the Earth.
                 Deep ocean trench – A deep valley under the ocean.

                 Earth event – Something that changes the Earth.

                 Earthquake – When the ground suddenly moves.

                 Erosion – When wind, water or ice move rocks or rock particles to a different
                 place.

                 Fault – A long, thin space that can open in rock near the edge of a plate.

                 Flood – When water covers ground that is usually dry.

                 Fossil –The shape of a living thing from long ago left in a rock.
                 Gravity – A force that pulls things down.

                 Hazard – A danger.

                 Ice – Solid, cold water.

                 Igneous rock – A rock made when hot, liquid rock cools.

                 Index fossil – A fossil that helps us find out the age of rocks and other fossils.

                 Lava – The magma that comes out of a volcano.

                 Magma – Liquid rocks inside the Earth.
                 Map – A drawing of part of the Earth. It shows where things are.

                 Melts – When a solid gets hot and changes to a liquid.

                 Metamorphic rock – A rock made when other rocks change underground.

                 Mid-ocean ridge – A mountain range under the ocean.

                 Mountains – Very tall parts of the land.
                 Mountain range – A long line of mountains, e.g. Himalayas, Alps, Andes.

                 Mud – A brown material made from water mixed with soil.

                 Ocean – A large sea, e.g. Atlantic, Pacific.

                 Oceanic plate – A plate under the ocean parts of Earth.

                 Particles – Very small pieces.

                 Plates – Pieces of the Earth’s surface. They can move.
