Planning and Preparing

People who live in an area with
                     natural hazards need to be
prepared (ready to deal with the
hazard). They need to know where
they can go to be safe if the natural

                     hazard happens. Signs and other
                     information can help them. People
who live in these areas are often

told to have an emergency kit ready to take if they are in danger. This is
a box with things like food, water, a torch and a first aid kit.

                     Special Buildings

                     Natural hazards, like earthquakes
                     and floods, can break buildings.
If buildings fall, this can be very
dangerous. It can also be very
                     expensive to repair later. Buildings

can be made so that they will not
break so easily. This picture shows
a building that can still stand in

an earthquake. The strong metal parts (shaped like a V) in front of the
                     windows stop the building falling.

                       Did You Know?

Scientists can also study the weather. They can take measurements and use

pictures from satellites. This helps them predict floods, and other hazards
                    like storms.
