This is Taipei 101. It is an earthquake-proof
building in Taiwan. Its special shape
helped it stand 230 km/h winds in a
                    typhoon in 2009.

                      Let’s Learn

                    Watching, Measuring and Predicting
                    Scientists can watch active volcanoes.

They can measure and look at things
like rocks and lava. This helps them to
predict when the volcano will erupt.
Scientists can also watch how the Earth’s

plates are moving. They often do this
in areas that have a lot of earthquakes
and tsunamis. This machine is a

seismograph. Scientists use them to measure movements of the Earth’s
plates. This can help predict earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes.

                    Warnings

Scientists can get information that tells
them a natural hazard will probably
happen. Then they need to warn people
about the danger. There are lots of

different ways to do this. They can send
warnings to people’s phones or cars.

They can put warnings on the TV or
radio. This helps people to get ready and stay safe.
